KCH Students Earn Money and Learn Life Skills

The financial crisis in Haiti has put additional financial pressure on our students, and several are working to earn money for their families while going to school and participating in all the programs KCH offers.

Two of our students got part-time jobs recently as medical concierges. When families travel from rural areas to Port-au-Prince seeking medical care for their children, they need help navigating the city and the hospital.

Our students help them with transportation, paperwork, and any other types of support they need to access the medical care their children need. This job is a perfect fit for our students, giving them a chance to help families in their time of need and experience the satisfaction of providing a valuable service.

“It’s a super-nice little job for them to earn a little bit of money, and also it is a wonderful learning experience for them,” says KCH founder Astrid de Vries. “The experience will help them when they finish school and look for a full-time job.”

Others are starting microbusiness to earn money. Student Stephania, who is studying to be a doctor, lives in a tiny house with six relatives. People always compliment Stephania on her beautiful hair and she saw an opportunity for a micro-business. She is selling the hair oil she uses on her own hair.
