Stepping into KCH’s next chapter: A home for girls
One image that sticks out from these early days at Kids Connection Haiti’s new hose for girls is a photo of two young women smiling as they sit outside, washing their laundry.
It’s a difficult chore they know too well.
Just months ago, these young Haitians were enslaved in abusive homes where they were forced to perform household tasks, as well as hard labor. It’s known as ‘restaveks’ there and it’s sadly still too common in Haiti.
It’s a problem Kids Connection Haiti kept running into over the last decade as it sought support orphaned young adults in getting an education and a job.
These young people need even more help and KCH had to do something to get them the support they need to stay off the street. That’s why we are in the midst of building this place that can help provide housing and safetly for these young women.
We have begun offering space to a few of these young women with their own beds, their own clothing and a space to heal.
So what’s behind those smiles as these girls wash their laundry in their new home?
It is relief. It’s the feeling of safety.
It will be a long road ahead for these girls. But they are taking their first steps on their new journey and KCH is going to be there to help them every step of the way.
